Natalie Cohen
As an immigrant from Germany, I explore the complexities of identity, belonging, and the sense of foreignness within Israeli culture. My paintings engage in a dialogue between the inner child and the emerging woman, revealing the vulnerability and strength found in the process of becoming. The creative process begins with continuous observation, followed by photographing the subject to capture its essence through secondary traits, rather than the face. I then create images on various surfaces, isolating the subject from the background. This "empty background" often symbolizes water, representing emptiness, or raw canvas, reflecting amniotic fluid, erasing the marks of life's experiences. Working figuratively, I aim for likeness and recognition. Depicting the subject from behind creates tension and relief, emphasizing that identity is not just a surface appearance, but a deeper characteristic of our personality and body.
